Yogurt, Pint Glasses, Whole Foods Salads Recalled

Chobani Greek Yogurt

Researchers have found that yogurt recalled in September 2013 poses a health risk to all consumers.

Chobani recalled its Greek yogurt last year after it was found to be contaminated with Murcor circinelloides, a fungus.

Food-borne pathogens are typically bacteria, viruses, and sometimes parasites. In a news release from the American Society for Microbiology, Soo Chan Lee said this incident is evidence that consumers need to pay more attention to fungi.

At the time, only people with weakened immune systems were thought to be at risk for illness. However, otherwise healthy people began to report gastrointestinal illness, showing that the recalled yogurt can have a negative effect on a wide range of consumers.

Chobani continues to dispute the findings of the study, saying that third-party tests had shown no evidence of pathogens.

“Chobani conducted an aggressive, statistically significant series of tests of the products voluntarily recalled in September 2013 with third-party experts confirming the absence of food-borne pathogens. Chobani stands by these findings, which are consistent with regulatory agency findings and the FDA’s Class II classification of the recall on October 30, 2013,” Dr. Alejandro Mazzotta, Chobani vice president of Global Quality, Food Safety, and Regulatory Affairs, said in a news release.

Mazzotta also said the company has implemented new microbiological testing equipment, as well as more than 500 daily microbiological tests.

Whole Foods Salads

Whole Foods has recalled 4 oz. container of pre-packaged Caesar salad and Mesclun Goat Cheese salad sold on July 8 in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The salads were mislabeled, resulting in undeclared allergens (fish and egg for the Casear salads, and tree nuts for the Mesclun Goat Cheese salads).

M&M’S World Pint and Shot Glasses

Charles Products, Inc. has recalled shot and pint glasses sold through M&M’S World stores in New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, and London. The glassware was found to exceed the FDA guidance levels for leachable lead and cadmium, two heavy metals that can have serious health complications if ingested at high levels.

The recall affects 1,202 pint glasses and 6,335 shot glasses sold between January 8 and April 16, 2014. The recall includes glasses with an image of the Red M&M’S character with the words “Hard on the outside, soft on the inside,” glasses with an image of the Blue M&M’S character with the words “Who’s your candy?”, and glasses with an image of the Green M&M’S character and the words “Eye candy.”

The recall only affects glasses with specific SKU numbers, which are listed here. Consumers should stop using the affected glassware immediately and contact M&M’S World at 1-800-858-3606, [email protected], or through the M&M’S World website.
